UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center to host annual Georgia Exports Conference

More than 25 percent of Georgia-grown agricultural crops are exported to other countries and that percent is growing.

According to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the value of Georgia goods exported last year reached $37.6 billion. This marked the fourth straight year Georgia has achieved record numbers.

Those interested in learning more about the export market can attend the Georgia Exports Conference set for Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center.

“The conference will provide a one-shop stop to learn about export basics,” said Kent Wolfe, director of the UGA Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development. The center, along with the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Small Business Development Center will host the free symposium designed for agribusiness companies in sectors such as machinery, commodities and value-added foods.

Attendees will hear from national industry experts on topics ranging from how to start or expand export programs and how to finance and protect international transactions to how to receive 50 percent reimbursement on international marketing expenses. They will also learn about the Market Access Program initiative and which international markets are right for specific products.

“The conference will feature all the critical components of exporting: how to get paid, how to identify export markets, how to work with a freight forwarder, etc.,” Wolfe said.

Georgia exports about 28 percent of its food and fiber production, and as the global marketplace continues to grow, so does the state’s export potential.

“There will be trade representatives (at the conference) looking for Georgia food products,” Wolfe said.

Representatives will be on hand from the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Southern U.S. Trade Association, U.S. Export Assistance Center, Export Import Bank, Small Business Development Center-International Trade Center and Small Business Administration.

Branch, Georgia Seed Development Professor in Peanut Breeding and Genetics in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, and Elzie Argene Claxton, an agriculture educator and 1980 CAES agricultural education graduate who went on to earn a master’s degree in 1982 and education specialist degree in 1984 from UGA’s College of Education. Last year, the peach industry lost $60 million due to the late freeze that hit much of the Southeast in mid-March 2023, said Jeff Cook, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent for Peach and Taylor counties. Stanley Culpepper has dedicated the length of his career to supporting farmers in their mission to feed and clothe the world. For the past 25 years, Culpepper has been a weed science specialist for University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and a College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences faculty member. Recently his job has become increasingly complex as mounting challenges around the availability of pesticides — primarily herbicides — have taken center stage in agricultural production.
